"I'm sad to say that I have spent too much of the last 10 years treating my children like they are criminals with ill intentions; like they purposely make that mess, or break that thing, or blurt out that inappropriate comment, just to upset me. But the truth is, my children aren't criminals and neither are yours (well, at least not yet). They're aliens...Young children are literally new to this planet. They don't know the rules or the language or the social etiquette. They want to. They like to learn and be included in what everyone else already knows, but it's hard. It's hard to be a little alien."
When I first saw the title Parenting Wild Things: Embracing the Rumpus I knew this was a book I needed to read. You see, I have three boys, not calm, well mannered boys but three full fledged silly, busy, bundles of energy. Boys who take pleasure in farting, screaming and smacking each other in public. My first few years of parenting were stressful and harder than I ever imagined! 11 years into it I have realized many things and am striving to be a calmer and more gentle mom by embracing the rumpus.
Parenting Wild Things is an honest, easy to read (I read it in one sitting) book that made me laugh out loud. Jessica's stories hit very close to home and her perspective was refreshing. Whether you are a new parent, seasoned and weary parent or struggling with ideals, Parenting Wild Things breaks down the myths of parenting. It addresses the challenges that many face, with a new perspective and fresh approach. A must read!
