Sacred Writings

I googled "sacred writings" and found quite a list! It was fascinating to read through. I whole-heartedly believe that the spiritual world is real, not to be confused with magical. The toothfairy I consider magical and unreal (since I am the one putting the $1 under the pillow, shhh, don't tell my kids). What I believe is real is a spiritual world we cannot see. A world of beings that work in our lives. I know some people think that idea is crazy, some entertain it and many live their lives by it.

With so many sacred writings it is hard to know what to believe. I think it good to know the background of what you are reading. I read the Bible. It is considered the best seller of all time. However, I think many people have no idea what the Bible is or where it came from. So it is time for a history lesson!

The Bible was written over a 1600 year span, from approximately 1500 B.C. to 100 A.D. There were over 40 authors from every walk of life. There are 66 individual books (some were letters written to specific groups of people). These writings were pulled together and recognized as the sacred writings of Christianity around 367 A.D. Despite the span of time and diversity amongst its authors, the Bible flows together as one book. It really is quite remarkable.

The Bible is the history of the Jewish people and a man named Jesus. Within the writings the Bible claims to be the inspired word of God, stating that God wanted to reveal Himself to man and did so through the Jewish people. Even if you do not believe the Bible to be a sacred writing it is a fascinating history book full of stories that inspire and a look at ancient culture.

The Bible also gives a perspective on why we are here, living on this big blue and green planet that is held in a distinct position in a mind-boggling universe. It talks of life, death and every subject in between. It is not a science book but a history book. Within its pages you find love, hate, deceit, battles (which my boys love), war, peace, wisdom and answers to questions many of us ask. Whether or not your choose to believe the answers, it is definitely a book to consider reading.
