"I have finally come up with a solution for family devotions. We aren't doing them! I feel like my life is full of ideals vs. reality. The ideal of having a time for our whole family to sit down and study God's word and pray, sounds wonderful. The reality is, I have 3 silly little boys who feed off of each other's silliness. We tried for a while to do a family devotion time with our two oldest boys (when the little guy was sleeping) but we found we spent so much time and energy working on sitting still, not giving funny answers, which were encouraged by the other brother's laughter, the crabby moments of "he touched me" or "he is looking at me"..."
I am sure you get the point, it wasn't worth the stress. What we did instead was try to spend time with each one individually to read and pray. It was more work but important work. These past few months I have noticed maturity in my oldest son, praise Jesus! He is almost 11-1/2 and it is encouraging to see him growing up. This past week, I decided it was time to try family devotions again. Our youngest, who is 5, is still pretty wiggly and silly. He goes to bed around 7. After he is in bed our plan is to sit down with the 2 oldest and do a devotion time. So far, so good! They were a little silly the first couple nights but we were able to redirect them. We are reading 1-2 chapters of the Bible and then doing a prayer time. I decided to start with the story of Joseph, my favorite! We are trying to focus our prayer time on praying for others, specifically our neighbors. Dan and I are intentionally reaching out to our neighborhood and we want our boys to understand that, so we feel it is important to not only show them by our actions but by our words, prayer!
